Operational Area Hazard Mitigation Program

Hazard mitigation is any sustainable action that reduces or eliminates long-term risk to people and property from future disasters. Mitigation planning breaks the cycle of disaster damage, reconstruction, and repeated damage. Hazard mitigation includes long-term solutions that reduce the impact of disasters in the future. The Santa Clara County Hazard Mitigation Program has four goals:

  1. Reduce the vulnerability of communities to disasters and their effects
  2. Promote individual and community safety and their ability to adapt to changing conditions to withstand and rapidly recover from disruptions due to emergencies
  3. Promote community vitality after a disaster
  4. Lesson response and recovery resource requirements after a disaster

The mitigation program uses a three-pronged approach to engage County departments and jurisdictions within the Operational Area and accomplish the mitigation program goals.
